The essay writing task requires you to consider a given issue or opinion and then explain your point of view on the subject by citing relevant reasons and/or examples based on your experience, observations or reading. An issue task requires you to take a position. However, you should be careful about the way in which you go about doing so. What is being assessed is your ability to think and write critically. Show that you recognize and understand the complexities of an issue before you take a position. Consider the issue from various perspectives, and think about your own experiences or reading related to the issue. Work your way to a position rather than simply announce one.

Do I have to completely agree/disagree with the issue statement? Can I take a middle stand?  You may use any of a variety of strategies.

  • You can completely agree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is strong and persuasive.
  • You can completely disagree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is convincing enough.
  • You may qualify the statement i.e. to some/great extent you can agree with it, and to some/great extent you can disagree with it. In such a case you’ve to develop reasoning, and illustrate for both perspectives of the issue.

Before you begin writing, do spend 5 to 7 minutes to jot down points on a scrap paper; jot down both sides of the issue.

Here we have jotted down points for few essay topics.  Use these points for reference. You can add your own points

Many school children today take part in work experience sessions for short periods of time instead of attending school. Is this a positive or a negative development?

Heading 1: School children gaining work experience for short durations at a younger age is a noteworthy/remarkable development for the today’s day and age. 1.Financial knowledge unfortunately is still not inclusive in today’s educational system. Thus these work sessions have become an essential for the current generation’s empowerment. Since the time is short, children can easily catch up to missed out curriculum later on with a little help or remedial classes. 2.Part time or full time work experience helps the child witness how to monetize their skill sets gained in their time in school and thus be able to narrow down on suitable career paths decisively. 3.The child learns to manage money responsibly, diplomatic interactions, and also starts to concretely think of how they would like to contribute to society in adulthood on exposure to a workplace environment. Heading 2: Childhood is the time to learn, grow and play. 1.Exposure to work at a young age could be counterproductive as children will think most of the school curriculum is unnecessary and do poorly in studies. Consequently, less children will grow up to value higher education and research work. 2.Children will be more money minded and will not try to imbibe humanistic qualities for the world at large. Everyone and everything will be seen in terms of its monetary value only. Some children may be very pressurized thinking about how much they need to earn to live reasonably in the current economy. 3.This growingly popular trend of ‘work experience placement’ where children are taken out of school to take part in various types of work, usually for around a week, is too short a duration to learn anything of enduring significance. 4.Working and experiencing the responsibilities they need to shoulder years later at a young and tender age renders the joy of simple things of life for children.
