The essay writing task requires you to consider a given issue or opinion and then explain your point of view on the subject by citing relevant reasons and/or examples based on your experience, observations or reading. An issue task requires you to take a position. However, you should be careful about the way in which you go about doing so. What is being assessed is your ability to think and write critically. Show that you recognize and understand the complexities of an issue before you take a position. Consider the issue from various perspectives, and think about your own experiences or reading related to the issue. Work your way to a position rather than simply announce one.
Do I have to completely agree/disagree with the issue statement? Can I take a middle stand? You may use any of a variety of strategies.
- You can completely agree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is strong and persuasive.
- You can completely disagree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is convincing enough.
- You may qualify the statement i.e. to some/great extent you can agree with it, and to some/great extent you can disagree with it. In such a case you’ve to develop reasoning, and illustrate for both perspectives of the issue.
Before you begin writing, do spend 5 to 7 minutes to jot down points on a scrap paper; jot down both sides of the issue.

Many people support the use of animals for testing medicines for humans. Others believe it isn’t appropriate to use animals for such experiments. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
View 1: Using animals for drug experimentation is not right
- Animals like other living beings also feel pain and thus suffer through various procedures to even have bodies that are conducive to testing.
- Short term testing will not help us gain an insight into the long term effects of the drug even if it has an immediate life saving effect.
- Unsuccessful testing can end in permanent irreparable damage or loss of life, and in worst case scenario unprecedented mutations.CoVID-19 viral pandemic apart from being a prime example of scientific callousness is also an example of how one small viral mutation can cause death at such a massive scale.
View 2: It is preferable that all medical drugs be properly tested prior to human consumption.
- A large number of animals are already being culled for human consumption, so it is not much different if some animals are sacrificed towards that end. In both cases, animals are utilized for aiding the human race.
- A thoroughly tested life saving drug via a few animals could help many people survive and so is a matter of survival.
- Some animals have DNA similar to that of humans. So its easier to predict the impact of a drug on humans, based on the animals response

- It’s the most suitable/conducive environment to experience freedom while being responsible as youth face life challenges and develop resilience.
View 2: When the youth lives away from family, they also has face long-term negative effects
- A sense of familial bonds or belonging to community and closeness is gradually eroding as more and more people start living alone.
- At times if children have not learnt or equipped themselves with the necessary skills to take care of oneself it may become overwhelmingly stressful and lead to anxiety, depression and burdensome isolation instead of enjoyable freedom.
- Once some young adults have experienced freedom of not having to take care of anyone else apart from themselves, may lead to them being inclined to forgo the opportunity to look after aged parents and preferring Old Age homes for their parents.
