The essay writing task requires you to consider a given issue or opinion and then explain your point of view on the subject by citing relevant reasons and/or examples based on your experience, observations or reading. An issue task requires you to take a position. However, you should be careful about the way in which you go about doing so. What is being assessed is your ability to think and write critically. Show that you recognize and understand the complexities of an issue before you take a position. Consider the issue from various perspectives, and think about your own experiences or reading related to the issue. Work your way to a position rather than simply announce one.
Do I have to completely agree/disagree with the issue statement? Can I take a middle stand? Â You may use any of a variety of strategies.
- You can completely agree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is strong and persuasive.
- You can completely disagree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is convincing enough.
- You may qualify the statement i.e. to some/great extent you can agree with it, and to some/great extent you can disagree with it. In such a case you’ve to develop reasoning, and illustrate for both perspectives of the issue.
Before you begin writing, do spend 5 to 7 minutes to jot down points on a scrap paper; jot down both sides of the issue.
Here we have jotted down points for few essay topics. Use these points for reference. You can add your own points

It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
View 1: Some talented geniuses are born and not made.
1. They require minimal learning and training to do well in that field.
2. They pick up skills in a short period of time in a particular field
3.Their hardwork and passion is definitely a contributing factor to the height of their excellence, but their ingenuity is inherent and not taught.
A person is called naturally talented when they display an untaught knack or flair for a certain sport, art or music.
Beethoven, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Michaelangelo, Einstein are some great examples that stand apart from the crowd in their age and time
View 2: Regardless of the presence or absence of inherent talent any child can excel in sports, music or arts.
1. All people are capable of achieving great heights as long as they have the right mindset, environment and passionate about any one particular skill.
2. Inexhaustible curiosity for learning and consistency in training become two main requirements in this case to achieve excellence.
3. They need a good coach/mentor
Lionel Messi, Sachin Tendulkar, K-pop stars, Gordon Ramsay, Usain Bolt are some prime examples of individuals who have set new standards and world records because they have trained themselves to surpass their limits time and again.
Conclusion: Each person is uniquely talented and given the right environment and encouragement from an early age can bring that aspect to blossom.
Many people support the use of animals for testing medicines for humans. Others believe it isn’t appropriate to use animals for such experiments. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
View 1: Using animals for drug experimentations is not right humanistically immoral to undertake.
1. Animals like other living beings also feel pain and thus suffer through various procedures to even have bodies that are conducive to testing.
2. Short term testing will not help us gain an insight into the long term effects of the drug even if it has an immediate life saving effect.
3. Unsuccessful testing can end in permanent irreparable damage or loss of life, and in worst case scenario unprecedented mutations.
4. CoVID-19 viral pandemic apart from being a prime example of scientific callousness is also an example of how one small viral mutation can cause death at such a massive scale.
View 2: It is preferable that all medical drugs be properly tested prior to human consumption.
1. In order to ensure the safety and effectiveness of chemicals it is advisable that they undergo exhaustive trials in all conceivable environments.
2. A large number of animals are already being culled for human consumption, so it is not much different if some animals are sacrificed towards that end. In both cases, animals are utilized for aiding the human race.
3. A thoroughly tested life saving drug via a few animals could help many people survive and so is a matter of survival.
Some people think that hosting an international sporting event is beneficial for a country, while others disagree. Do the advantages of hosting a major sporting event outweigh its disadvantages?
View 1: International sporting events garner global attention and thus being given the opportunity to host it is extremely favourable for the country.
1. The nation’s economy receives a boost due to the global recognition attracting foreign investments, businesses. Tourism increases bringing in revenue to local businesses, hotels, restaurants and transport services.
2. The government invests in upgrading transport, stadiums and other public infrastructure in preparation for the event and these changes enhance the living conditions of the citizens in the long run.
3. Numerous temporary and permanent job opportunities emerge in construction, hospitality and event management. Such an event also provided small and medium size business and start-ups a platform for global exposure and collaborations.
4. The event promotes cultural understanding and deepens unity among nations.
5. Citizens feel a sense of pride, boosting morale and social cohesion in the country.
View 2: Hosting international sports events can take a toll on under-developed and developing nations.
1. Third world countries might overspend to meet international standards resulting in financial strain or long-term debt. In such scenarios economic benefits are temporary if the costs are properly managed with the nation’s future in mind.
2. Stadiums and other facilities may become “white elephants” with little use after the event.
3. Impoverished or unrepresented communities may be displaced to make room for event venues. Large scale construction and increased tourism contribute to environmental exploitation and pollution.
4. If the event is poorly managed, it can damage the country’s reputation rather than enhance it.
