The essay writing task requires you to consider a given issue or opinion and then explain your point of view on the subject by citing relevant reasons and/or examples based on your experience, observations or reading. An issue task requires you to take a position. However, you should be careful about the way in which you go about doing so. What is being assessed is your ability to think and write critically. Show that you recognize and understand the complexities of an issue before you take a position. Consider the issue from various perspectives, and think about your own experiences or reading related to the issue. Work your way to a position rather than simply announce one.
Do I have to completely agree/disagree with the issue statement? Can I take a middle stand? You may use any of a variety of strategies.
- You can completely agree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is strong and persuasive.
- You can completely disagree with the statement provided your line of reasoning is convincing enough.
- You may qualify the statement i.e. to some/great extent you can agree with it, and to some/great extent you can disagree with it. In such a case you’ve to develop reasoning, and illustrate for both perspectives of the issue.
Before you begin writing, do spend 5 to 7 minutes to jot down points on a scrap paper; jot down both sides of the issue.
Here we have jotted down points for few essay topics. Use these points for reference. You can add your own points

Topic 7:
It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
View 1: Some talented geniuses are born and not made.
1. They require minimal learning and training to do well in that field.
2. They pick up skills in a short period of time in a particular field
3.Their hardwork and passion is definitely a contributing factor to the height of their excellence, but their ingenuity is inherent and not taught.
A person is called naturally talented when they display an untaught knack or flair for a certain sport, art or music.
Beethoven, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Michaelangelo, Einstein are some great examples that stand apart from the crowd in their age and time
View 2: Regardless of the presence or absence of inherent talent any child can excel in sports, music or arts.
1. All people are capable of achieving great heights as long as they have the right mindset, environment and passionate about any one particular skill.
2. Inexhaustible curiosity for learning and consistency in training become two main requirements in this case to achieve excellence.
3. They need a good coach/mentor
Lionel Messi, Sachin Tendulkar, K-pop stars, Gordon Ramsay, Usain Bolt are some prime examples of individuals who have set new standards and world records because they have trained themselves to surpass their limits time and again.
Conclusion: Each person is uniquely talented and given the right environment and encouragement from an early age can bring that aspect to blossom.
Topic 8:
Scientists believe that the world is in danger due to environmental changes. Some people say that personal lifestyle changes should be made to reduce the damage to the environment, while others think that the government should do something to help. Discuss both views and give your own opinion
View 1: Lifestyle changes should be made by individuals.
- Planet earth belongs to everyone and each life benefits from it therefore the onus of taking action lies with each one of us.
- If millions of people adopt small changes in their daily lives can cause a collective large scale impact on the environmental condition.
- As consumers when we consciously choose eco-friendly products it encourages businesses to inculcate sustainable practices.
- Individual habits are immediate changes, while corporate or governmental organisations would take longer to plan and implement policies.
- A long-term awareness for generations is also built when environmental concern is part of our lifestyle.
View 2: Government should be committed to creating a sustainable nation for its citizens.
- Government bodies have the required power and authority to enforce environmental laws, mitigate pollution and encourage renewable energy research.
- At a pan-nation level, they can improve infrastructures like public transport systems and invest in clean energy projects.
- Utilising the system of taxes, fines and emission limits, the government can hold corporate and commercial industries accountable.
- Ensuring consistent and long lasting environmental conservation across diverse geographies requires standardized national policies.
- Citizens involvement and contribution can be inspired via governmental incentives, education and eco-friendly alternatives.
Topic 9:
People in senior positions should be compensated with significantly higher salaries than people in lower positions in the same company. Do you agree or disagree?
View 1: Seniority in the hierarchy should be compensated with higher salaries.
- Higher the rank, greater the responsibility of taking accountability of making critical decisions that affect the entire organisation.
- Senior roles have higher educational qualifications, years of experience and field expertise.
- Senior positions are usually accompanied with longer working hours, travel and sacrifice.
- In order to attract and retain highly skilled and capable employees, higher pay is a necessity in the competitive job market.
View 2: Contribution of the individual and the performance not the seniority in position should determine higher pay.
- Unskilled labour of an organization is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of an organisation and should be compensated fairly for their role.
- Employee morale is diminished and a resentful work environment is created as a consequence of large pay gaps between senior executives and regular workers.
- Pay based on position or rank causes stark disparity in living conditions where lower ranked employees struggle with meeting basic needs, higher ranked managers earn sometimes unreasonably more based on just their qualifications rather than their contribution.
- At the end of the day the success of a company is the result of the culminated efforts of all employees and not just top brass members.
- In some cases, higher salaries are unjustified as they may be based on connections and seniority, rather than on merit or value-addition to the company.
Topic 10:
People should follow the local customs and traditions, when they come to live in a new country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
View 1: People should follow local customs and traditions of the country they have decided to live in.
1.In order to peacefully coexist with the natives it is better to understand their culture and respect local customs.
2.The transition into the new social life becomes easier when people adapt to the cultural conventions and it exhibits appreciation and respect for culture and values of the host country.
3.It shows willingness to integrate on the part of the immigrants and reduces prejudice and improves communal relationships.
4.In some nations it is a necessity to follow local customs to comply with laws, social norms and the workplace.
View 2: Adopting local customs should not be enforced onto immigrants.
1.It should not be a necessity to abandon one’s own cultural heritage just to be accepted by natives. Locals should also open up and embrace new cultures as social integration is a two-way process.
2.Communal harmony is born out of a multicultural society and it promotes tolerance for diverse traditions.
3.Unless and until the customs upheld don’t cause harm to anyone, each person should have the freedom to express and practice their cultural customs.
4.Forcing immigrants to conform to certain traditions that may go against one’s personal ethical and religious values, is disrespectful in nature and violates their rights.
