How to improve mathematical thinking

Math thinking for GMAT, GRE, STEM

Sequential thinking (linear thinking) is a way of thinking that involves breaking down a problem into a series of steps and then following a logical progression to reach a solution

People with strong sequential reasoning skills can:

  • Automatically organize large amounts of information
  • Add, sort, store, and retrieve information easily
  • Often don’t feel the need to write down ideas

For this sum, you need to transfer water from one bucket to another in a series of steps, till you end up with a bucket with 4L of water.

You cannot throw away water. You start with 8L of water. You cant add more.

I have given the first 2 steps

Step 1: Fill the 8L bucket with water fully

Bucket 1 – 8L      Bucket 2- 0L    Bucket 3- 0L

Step 2: Transfer the water from bucket 1 to bucket 2

So bucket 1 will have 3L and bucket will have 5L

Bucket 1 – 3L      Bucket 2- 5L    Bucket 3- 0L

Step 3

Transfer the water from bucket 2 to bucket 3.

Bucket 1 – 3L      Bucket 2- 2L    Bucket 3- 3L

Step 4

Transfer the water from bucket 3 to bucket 1.

Bucket 1 – 6L      Bucket 2- 2L    Bucket 3- 0L

Step 5

Transfer the water from bucket 2 to bucket 3.

Bucket 1 – 6L      Bucket 2- 0L    Bucket 3- 2L

Step 6

Transfer the water from bucket 1 to bucket 2.

Bucket 1 – 1L      Bucket 2- 5L    Bucket 3- 2L

Step 7

Transfer the water from bucket 2 to bucket 3.

Bucket 1 – 1L      Bucket 2- 4L    Bucket 3- 3L

Now we have bucket 2 with 4L. I got it 7 steps. Can you do it in lesser number of steps.
